Computer Lab at DeMatha

For a child growing up in rural Kamrup, confidence with a computer is not a luxury — it is the difference between being able to take an opportunity and having to let it pass. DeMatha runs a dedicated Computer Room where Computer Applications is taught as a core CBSE subject from Class III onward, so that every student leaves Class VIII able to use a machine properly rather than having only heard about one.

What Students Learn

From First Keystroke to Real Skill

Foundations First
Students begin with the parts of a computer, safe handling, keyboard and mouse control, and file management — the groundwork that everything else rests on.
Productivity Software
Word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, taught as practical skills students will use in higher classes and in working life, not as memorised menu paths.
Internet & Digital Safety
How to search well, judge what is reliable, and stay safe online. Digital citizenship is taught alongside digital skill.
Hands-On Practice
Lessons are conducted in the Computer Room itself, so theory is followed immediately by practice at a machine rather than copied into a notebook.
Qualified Instruction
Computer subjects are taught by staff holding relevant qualifications, including an Advanced Certificate in Computer Application, ITI (COPA) and ITI (ICTSM).
Computer Literacy Day
Marked every 1st December by the Department of IT, with activities that take students beyond the syllabus into how technology is actually used.

Why It Matters

Technology as a Gateway, Not a Barrier

Schools in rural Assam have often treated the computer room as a locked showpiece. At DeMatha it is a working classroom. Every child from Class III upward has timetabled practical time on a machine, because the school's founding conviction is that geography must not decide a child's future. A student here should walk into a college computer lab in Guwahati or anywhere else and feel entirely at home.
