Sports & Games at DeMatha

Physical education at DeMatha is timetabled, not squeezed in when there is time left over. A qualified Physical Education teacher holding a B.P.Ed leads games and fitness across the school, the campus includes a dedicated Kids' Play Park for the youngest children, and the sporting year builds to a three-day Annual Sports Day every December. Alongside the running and the games sit yoga and chess — because strength of body and steadiness of mind are taught together here.

Sport, Yoga and Strategy

Kids' Play Park
A safe, dedicated outdoor play area for the Pre-Primary children, where the youngest students build coordination, balance and confidence through free play.
Yoga Sessions
Regular yoga for mindfulness and physical wellbeing, with a full Yoga Day celebration each June led by the Health and Wellness Club alongside Rabha Divas.
Health & Wellness Club
Runs First Aid Day in September, World Cancer Day in February and Mental Health Day in October, treating health as something students learn about, not only something they are told.
Inter-Class Games
Regular physical education periods and inter-class fixtures through the year, so that sport is a weekly habit rather than an annual event.

Why We Insist On It

A Child Who Moves, Learns Better

There is a temptation in schools under pressure to treat games as the first thing to cut. DeMatha does the opposite. A child who has run, played and competed comes back to the classroom calmer and sharper, and learns something about losing well that no textbook teaches. Sport here is part of the school's idea of educating the whole person — mind, body, character and conscience together.
