Library at DeMatha

A school library earns its place by being used. DeMatha's library supports the CBSE curriculum with reference material and reading books across subjects and reading levels, and it is overseen by the Vice Principal, Fr. Done Prakash O.SS.T., who holds the Librarian's charge and is pursuing a Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences. The aim is straightforward — that children here grow up reading for pleasure, not only for marks.

Building a Reading Culture

Curriculum Reference
Reference material mapped to the CBSE syllabus across English, Science, Social Science, Mathematics and the language subjects, supporting project work and independent study.
Graded Reading
Storybooks and readers grouped by reading level, so a child in Class II and a child in Class VIII each find something they can actually finish and enjoy.
Read, Discuss, Grow
The Literary Club's flagship reading session, held every June, where students read a text and then argue about it — the part that turns a reader into a thinker.
World Literacy Day
Marked each 8th September by the Literary Club, with reading activities that connect the school's own children to the wider question of who gets to read at all.
National Education Day
Observed on 11th November, celebrating learning and the people who made education accessible in India.
Language Departments
The library supports the English, Hindi, Assamese and Bodo departments, reflecting the languages the children of this region actually live in.

The Long View

A Habit That Outlasts School

Examination results are measured in a single year. A reading habit is measured across a lifetime. The library exists so that children from Tulsibari and the villages around Rangia leave DeMatha with the assumption that books belong to them — that curiosity is normal, that a question is worth chasing down, and that the world is much larger than the one they can see from the school gate.
